Very nice work, indeed! I like that you added a master power switch. I did that when I added a unit in my Trade Wind.

You gave us info about the component speaker system. How about a few more details about the head unit itself. The photo is too small to even read the brand. You mentioned iPod adapter, is it iPhone compatible? iPhones complain if products connected are not verified.

The ones that I have seen that list iPhone compatibility so far have been Alpine units.

Thanks,

When I looked closely at your photo, I thought it looked like Kenwood, but wasn't sure. Certainly couldn't get any idea of the model.

I will vouch for the Kenwood Excelon stereo. I put the same one in my off-road wrangler about a year ago. It had tons of speakers/amps. I loved the stereo. It was well made and with the usb port direct line in for the ipod, you can't beat it. It was also very low cost compared to other stereo's with the same features. The adjustment cabability/2 rca pre-amps made it possible to grow the sound system well.

I went with a Boss (inexpensive) unit that is am/fm/cd/dvd with a headphone output, mp3 input and a USB input for my Ipod. I hooked it up to our new 19" HDTV and we play movies through it as well.

Best of all worlds IMHO.

Kudos again on your work!

After downloading the owner's manual from Kenwood's site, I see that it has a works with iPhone logo, too. I also noticed the KDC-X993 CD version:

Amazon.com: Kenwood Excelon KDC-X993 CD receiver: Electronics

that has built-in bluetooth and comes with a remote. This has vaulted up very high on my wish list.

Having a problem,

Installed a new automotive radio (with CD, remote, and all the bells and whistles) in the upper front cabinet in or '74 - 31' A/S.

The AM radio signal will disappear from time to time and you hear a disturbing whine from the speakers.

Right now I suspect the radio is picking up interference from the new Xanex that replace the Univolt. I suspect this interference is from the Xanex because the weird whine occurs when the Xanex starts up to charge. Once the Xanex has done it's thing the AM signal returns.

Do we need a filter of some kind?

Anyone been there and done this?

Thanks.

Bob

Nairn,
I get the same thing while listening to coast to coast AM stations when I travel near high-powered electrical lines or sometimes when I pass tractor trailers (maybe CB interference). Not sure if there is much I can do since I am mobile.

In your case, is this a unit that has AM antena inputs or is it a car radio type with an internal antena?

If it has a place to plug in 2 wires for AM (most house units do), you can make a simple antena with wire and position it away from the interferance (see site below for making the antena). If it is a car radio and built in AM antena, the only thing that works is moving the radio away from interference or sometimes turning the radio may work but if it is mounted stationary, that will not work. I don't know much about filters but the article below mentions getting an inline filter that plugs in between the Univolt and the wall receptacle it is plugged into that may be able to help (really not sure on this though).

AM Radio Interference

The radio is a new 12 Volt automotive radio with AM, FM, CD, and MPD.
The aerial is mounted externally on the trailer. The PO changed the original aerial at some point (probably ran into a tree and broke it).
This noise interference is when parked and tuned into a known strong AM signal.
Thanks, Bob

Put in another stereo in our latest AS, this time there was not enough room for the components so I built a box for each.

Is that a hinge on the top of the speaker box. I am about to upgrade my speakers and have the material for the box. If it is a hinge, how did you secure the bottom.

mwells,
Not to answer for Nash but looking at the top 2 photos in post #33, it looks like 2 90 degree angle brackets, one at the top and one at the bottom, doesn't look like it's hinged. Can see the top one in the first photo and both in the second.

BTW - Looks good Nash and I bet it sounds great!

Bose system in 72

I bought a Bose/Onkyo Combo system from Sams. Put the receiver in the overhead bin (above the Vizio 2"LCD) and the speakers on the front panels by the door and kitchen. There weren't any previous speakers installed so I started from scratch. Of course the small Bose speakers are offset by the subwoofer module that also houses the crossover. I mounted it under the sink and bought a cheap plastic cover panel from The Shack. Also put a small DVD player in the bin next to the receiver.
