New LG LED TV 9 volt

I have a Led TV 9 Volt TV. You hook it up to a power supply which converts it to 9 volt. I assume it runs off of 9 volts. The power supply plug in says 9v. I was wondering if there is a way to hook it up to 12 volt. Is that possible and if so how do you do that? I would like to run it off my trailers 12 volt when we are boon docking? Any advice would be appreciated.

Another note this is going in my 1960 Overlander. You will probably see posting like I was 2 years ago. I retired last Friday so I will have the freedom and time to me more involved on the forums

On the 9 volt power supply it will state how many watts it is. You would need a 9 volt regulator with that or more power (watts) rating between the 12 volt and TV.

I don't know of any simple way to run your 9 volt TV from the 12.6 to 13.8 (even up to 14 volts at times) system in the Airstream. You would need a regulated DC to DC converter with a capacity of several amps. Although they may exist, I am not aware of any such beast.

My Samsung TV in the 2014 FC is a 14 volt unit, and probably could be run directly from the Airstream DC system, but even then the voltage may not be well enough regulated directly to do it safely. At least I am not willing to try it.

A small simple inverter will probably be the best solution and the energy penalty is not all that great. Now, even having said that, some of the inverters such as the one which came in my FC (option) are really inefficient. Mine takes 1.9 amps just to be on, doing nothing. I have put a second much more efficient inverter in, which takes 0.45 amps extra over the actual load when operating, and in search mode, virtually nothing so I don't even have to remember to turn it off. It is a Moringstar Sure Sine, costing about $225. Not cheap but works really well.

I'm guessing in the 36 watt range, no it probably work on 12 volts. You could google a 9 volt power supply and build one yourself. Parts might be as outrageous as $2 or so....

Radio Shack has 12V to various lower voltage adapters. They come with an assortment of plugs...but whether it will plug into your TV or not would have to be investigated.

Go to Radio Shack and tell them what you want. My Vizio has been running off 12vdc for several years now with no problem.

I think the most economical way would be to use a small converter from 12v to 120v then just plug it in as you would in your house. If this is this a small portable 8-9 inch tv.

Yes, that's exactly what they sold me and it works just fine. A simple resistor drops the voltage from 12vdc to 9vdc.

A simple resistor is fine if the load is constant, which it is not with a television. In addition, the input voltage on the DC side of an Airstream can vary from about 12 volts when the batteries are low to up to 14 volts when charging. A simple resistor will not deal with that.

Now, some Televisions are not very sensitive to input voltage, but some are. So, the fact that one works may not mean that all will.

The Radio Shack 12 to 9 volt adaptor in the link above is only 1000 mA or 1 amp. That is about 12 watts. Most televisions take more than that.

My goal is to keep you from damaging your television. You need a good device, fairly high powered (like 2 to 3 amps), which will cope with varying input voltage of 12 to 14 volts and a regulated output voltage of 9 volts to be sure all will not cause more issues.

You can use a voltage divider but it wastes energy. I would contact the TV manufacture and ask them if it will run off 12V. Then pursue a voltage divider. The voltage divider will maintain the voltage even if the load changes. It is about as simple as it gets. You need to make sure the resistors are rated for the current.

You could simplyseries enough diodes (rated at 3 amps or so) to drop the voltage. Figure about .6 volt drop per diode.

I built a 12 volt to 9volt supply with an adjustable regulator for a 9 inch TV but have since found adjustable regulator boards on Amazon so cheap it isn't worth the hassle of doing it yourself

Just put it on an old pill bottle with a 12 volt lighter cord on one end and whatever the other device needs on the other end
