Headphones with audio system

2012 Serenity with the SONY system and Samsung TV, no phone jack. Finally figured out how to connect headphones to watch TV/movies.
Airstream provides an XA-300 Aux-In selector with their sound input to AUX2(hence the need to have the SONY on CD2 for audio). But the XA-300 has a headphone jack and volume control on AUX1. So I moved the audio input cable to AUX1, selected CD1, plugged in headphones and had sound.
This is a less than optimum solution because there is no way to mute the TV speakers and still get sound. But I found that with the TV volume very low, the head unit volume all the way down, and the headphone volume control all the way up, the objective is achieved.
Good old Airstream makes this harder than it need be. They wired the XA-300 then shoved it into the cutout for the radio, where it falls down into the overhead cabinet. To get to it, I had to remove the radio, then the radio cutout is not big enough to get your hand in past the wrist so grabbing the XA-300 is a problem. Much swearing. Then I had to remove the cover over DVD enclosure to fish a headphone extension cable through to the XA-300. Now I have a phone jack in the overhead with the DVD player.

I'm thinking about a Bluetooth transmitter than I can plug into the back of the TV and a set of over the head Bluetooth headphones. That way I can watch TV and movies play back to the TV via my iPad.

On my TV there is no jack on the back to plug that transmitter into. Scouring other posts it seems that Airstream bought Samsungs without that capability and modified the TV's by tapping into the speakers for audio out RCA cables.

Bummer. That Samsung must have been the lowest model of the line to only allow the TV speakers for output.

No kidding. Frankly with the labor to modify the TV's for audio out, they probably could have purchased something more expensive with a phone jack. I like Samsungs but never had seen one this size without a phone jack.

I was able to use the RCA outputs to connect to a headphone amp and then my wired headphones. This is on a Vizio TV... dunno if the same deal will work on that Samsung. I also use this output to hook into my BOSS stereo. I have to turn off the TV speakers otherwise I get this strange boomy effect.

Suzy,

How do you turn off the TV speakers? with Mute? doesn't that kill the output to the RCA connectors? It does on my Samsung. Your solution, I think, is the same as mine except that I am using the installed SONY hardware and I do not have any more wires below or behind the TV. I would love a way to mute the TV speaker without eliminating the output to the audio output cable that Airstream installed.

I'm giving up and shopping for a new main TV, since the audio RCAs that Airstream added provide inferior sound signal.
If anyone comes across a good replacement flatscreen tv, please share!
I've noticed that not all TVs will work, depending on where the connectors are positioned which determines how much clearance is needed behind. And of course you want "real" audio outputs, the right mounting configuration, etc.

Let me know if you find a plug and play substitute that has a phone jack!

For my VIZIO D39H-C0, it's in Settings/Audio on the TV's menu.

If you do want to connect up some headphones, you'll need a headphone amp. I used a BEHRINGER MICROAMP HA400, about $25 from Amazon. It's a 4 channel amp, which I only use 1 channel. It takes the big (1/4") jacks, so you probably need adapters like I did.

Lots of great TVs go on super sales these days, especially if they don't have the requisite number of bells and whistles. My VIZIO has only a single HDMI input, and is 720P. Got it on Woot.com.

I just checked my Samsung and there is nothing in the TV menu that messes with speakers on or off. The remote has a Mute function but that kills the sound on the AS-added output cable as well. My workaround functions so I will live with it until, perhaps, someone identifies a replacement TV that would be plug and play. As I said, there is no need for a headphone amp as the provided SONY aux input selector does that.

I'm looking into an Insignia 28". 25.3" wide. Has 3.5mm and coax digital audio out ports The Samsung 28" is a little wider and my Classic pleated curtains and valance may interfere. Available at Best Buy. $139.

The back of the Insignia mounting is 200mm x 100mm.

The Insignia that I see here seems to have 4 mounting pins in the back. Is the 2-pin configuration that Airstream uses unusual and hard to find in the retail world? I haven't shopped for a TV in years, so I don't know what is standard for mounts.

The back mounting is either 100mm x 100x or 200 x 100. All TVs have one of these arrangements. My 25fb mount uses 4 screws.

They only con I think on this TV is the tinny speakers but they are all like that. The speakers face down and are about 4 watts. You have to crank it up in the store to hear anything. My current Sony 23" LCD has the speakers below the screen facing the viewing area. They are good enough to watch the news. Movies get played through the Sony head audio system.
