Getting on top of it
I feel a stronge urge to climb on top of my 71 Tradewind and remove some antenna leftovers. There are 2 arms and a support bracket, but no antenna anymore. I want to take off the arms and support bracket for later use. How does one get on top of the roof without beding the aluminum? Is it safe to sort of slither across the roof where the ribs are? I went up there a few days ago and found things very soft - abandoned the project immediately.

The vertical ribs are very strong, they will safely support you. In between is nothing.Try a piece of plywood (2x8, etc.) long enough to span a couple of ribs to sit on, put an old blanket under it to protect the skin. It can get slippery pretty fast on the curves.

Thanks for the confirmation. I have a piece of plywood like that. It's carpet covered on one side.
Look for my posts - if none appear in the next week or so, then I've fallen off the roof of the Tradewind. Call 911.

The plywood/carpet sounds like a better idea than dragging a blanket up then a board. Will keep my eye out for posts, have my finger on 911.

We used a rubber backed mat , laid it over the roof and stood only on the ribs. Worked well but still scared the stuff out of me thinking i was going to slide off.
I want to borrow my friends scaffold that would go over the roof and then roll down the side as needed. Its comes apart for transport, so I might make use of it, IF I can get the parts in my SUV.
Now if I had a barn, and a scaffold, and Frank's machine shop, and that big air compressor my neighbor has.... and.......

Maybe use some of that non-stick material that people line their shelves with to keep dishes from sliding. Sounds to me like you're building a toboggin (SP?) with the carpet/blanket idea.
