Easy Speaker Upgrade

ID:	245917Easy decision to upgrade speakers. Last AS I went all out with component Kickers, this time around I decided not to build boxes, yet. So I went with JBL 3-way 6.5 inch GTO638. Sound is excellent.
Very easy to swap out front speakers of our 2010 Classic. However, you will have to put some electrical/duct tape around the hole. These speakers will not fit in the rear without resizing.

Thank you for this post and picture. I am deciding on speakers for upgrading my own terrible 6.5 factory Sony speakers. Did you also look at Polk speakers? It's so hard to determine how a particular speaker will sound in the AS.

I did look at the Polk. I thought the JBLs had just a little better high end. And you can adjust the highs on the speaker. It really is a nice spot for good speakers as the insulation makes them sound great.

I like crisp highs, so that is very helpful, thanks. My location will be under cabinets, not in wall, so I'm concerned about a poor seal / sound leaking out the back. May have to get a professional involved...

Look at the infinity Reference range. These work really well off of the type of power marine/car audio units output. The sound is crisp and balanced. Finding the 6.5inch with a grill cover is tough. i bought the 6032cf that has no grill (cf means custom fit, for oem car replacement). These have a attenuation of +3db for the tweeter if needed. I use it

These fitted fine behind the stock Clarion grills in my case.

JBL and Infinity are both Harmon products, can't go wrong with either really!

Thanks again! I added the Infinity to my Amazon wish list... Also came across a review that suggested their Kappa model, which "sounds" good on paper. Now I need to find a showroom and listen to all of these.
I wonder at what point a supplemental amplifier will be needed... and if an amateur like me can install it, since I don't want to leave my AS at a car audio shop.
I installed an Alpine car stereo and some speakers once into a Pontiac in the late 80s, and swapped out the head unit in my current AS, but those were pretty straightforward tasks.

Smile Polk DB651S in 2017 FC

Very pleased with results. Polk DB651's are a easy replacement for the very tinny Clarion speakers - estimated 30 minutes for all 4 speakers. I also installed closed-cell acoustic baffles behind each speaker. No new screw holes required. Few adjustments to the Collins subwoofer frequency and gain settings and audio MUCH improved.

Couple of pointers:
1. Pull off the metal grill on the Clarion units to expose the screws... I used a sharp pointed knife to get between grill and case to price it off.
2. For speaker under the M303 head unit, push all the nest of wires out of the way as you install speaker, there is not much clearance and another reason to install the acoustic baffle to provide some thermal insulation between speaker and head unit.

To save others the time hunting around for original speaker parts... our 28ft FC FB (2017) came with Clarion SRE1601R speakers and Collins IC100 Subwoofer. I may replace the sub unit at some point but sounds fine enough to live with it for the season.

Hope this is useful to some of you out there.

Try replacing the Collins subwoofer with a powered Bazooka sub (and order the optional level control for easy adjusting). Another super easy install and it mates well with the Polks. Makes movies more fun and music more enjoyable.
