Dish 211K Satalite Receiver

I have the Dish Tail gator with the 211K receiver. I upgraded so I could use it as a DVR while traveling. The problem is, to record programing both the receiver and the TV have to be left on. What a bummer. Discovered the external storage is not work unless the receivers are the same model. I had copied a lot of movies from my 722K DVR in the house only to learn the storage devise will not work with the 211K. Has anyone found the same problem and is there a way to get around it.

We wanted to be able to record programs while away from the trailer but I do not want to leave the TV and receiver on. I have found the Dish 211K to be a very hot running unit that can easily burn through fabric (couch).
