Antenna Replacement

Even though we don't use it...I would like to replace the antenna on the outside of the AS. Here's what it looks like now...there's nothing there because I removed it-because the cork lining and seal around it was 'shot' and worn out. Anybody know what they did for theirs?

I had exactly the same antenna on my 1976 ARGOSY. It had deteriorated past salvage and I found, too late, that you pretty much have to remove an interior wall panel to get at the thing.

Therefore I replaced my antenna with a flexible rubber model, like you see on current model cars and trucks.

You can buy these at auto radio shops. They are called “universal antennas”. You cut a 1” hole then you insert the cable and antenna. When you screw it down the inside portion spreads, like a butterfly bolt, to lock it in.

I was told that the side-mounted antenna could get interference from the Airstream metal body. The advice was always to mount antennas as high as possible so I chose the roof. See the completed job here:

I will create a metal plate of some kind to disguise the original location.

Thankfully, when I took out the eight track player from inside the front- I connected a string to the antenna wire when I pulled it out...now a string hangs there so if something does come up- I can pull the (or a) wire back thru...when we get a smaller digital system...I will go look for that universal though. I stored the old antenna away and then it got pitched somehow. Thankyou!
