12 v vs. 110v?

Hi All,

I am new to the forum and pretty new to the Airstream camp. We have a 1969 27' overlander fixer. I've done lots but its far from ready. I am wondering about the voltage. I am plugged in to 110v power and the lights and outlets work. I am wanting to hook up a stereo. I see the speaker wires and the power wires at the upper front cabinet. Is this 110V or 12V or does the trailer converter do something magic? Any ideas on this? What was the 12 v capability with these older trailers. It has some kind of a converter that has a very low hum when the trailer is plugged in. Speaker size and any input on the right stereo would also be fantastic!

Thank you!

Wade

Welcome to the forum!

You want an ordinary car stereo. Nothing special needed. You can see some discussion of speakers and a couple of examples of others' installations here: http://www.airforums.com/forums/f450...ent-38596.html

The hum is coming from the device that converts 110v AC to 12v DC, the Univolt. The older Univolts are notorious for overcharging batteries. They are prime candidates for replacement. The newer replacements also deliver a clean 12v DC, sometimes the old ones didn't. There are many threads about replacing Univolts, here is a link to a Google search using the term "Univolt": Univolt - Google Search There's plenty of reading on the topic there.
