Where to install air conditioning?

Hi there,
sorry, I tried to find information on this but couldn't find this topic. Could someone lead me in the right sub forum, please?
I want to install a small air conditioning unit in my 1968 Sovereign. My builder is unsure where to put it. In the middle of roof would mean having to go through the frame structure, maybe compromising it? Could it be installed in one of the vents with the vent still operable?
What have others done?

Probably use a vent hole, no the vent would be covered up, so you would loose it..there might even be wiring there for the ac?

Your trailer should be pre-wired for a roof top unit. Send an e-mail to Airstream and they will be able to tell you where it is for your model. They'll tell you the distance from which rib the wires are located. I think they usually locate the wires adjacent one of the roof top vents, but I can't be positive.

Thanks, that is good to know. I believe the old wiring has been removed but maybe there will be instructions of where exactly to put it.

No experience with Airstreams until now (we don't have many vintage Airstreams in Australia), also not that experienced with caravans, I believe. Aircon was a last minute add on decision.

The information you get from Airstream might be inaccurate...it was for my '67 Caravel. According to Airstream, the a/c wiring (on a '68 Sovereign) should be "close to" 140" rearward of the #1 rib.

I found the location once I removed the interior skin on my '67 Caravel. The factory wrote "no AC" on the bottom of the roof skin and drew a read square where the a/c cutout would have been made.

Do NOT cut through any of the main spars/ribs.

Any chance there is a 120v plug in the ceiling? Both of my 70s models, had a receptcial and drain tube. If you think your close to the right spot, drill a small hole that you could cap with a plastic cap in case you are way off. Then probe around with a coat hanger, and you can "feel" for the ribs. Then mark out the hole. It's the same size as a vent hole.
