Refrigerator storage

Basic trailer refrigerator storage question:
How do you store for weeks or several months?

Dometic RM2551. Gas & electricity turned off, trailer interior heated.

Store with door shut tight or left cracked open for air circulation?

Ever open an old home refrigerator that sat without power for a while?? WHEWW!

I leave mine open a couple of days after turning it off so it will dry. After that, I shut the door.

Clothespins

Put clothespins on the door latches, that will keep the doors open enough to keep it aired out. Store those clothespins in the freezer while you are using the machine and ready to put back on when you shut it down.
Put some pinesol in a bucket on the floor, that odor will help keep the bears from wanting to sign your refrig door with a bear claw. Oh, different thread.

Unless you want to grow a science experiment in your fridge, I suggest a thorough cleaning after each camping trip with some kind of disinfectant, like Lysol wipes. If there's moisture in the fridge, dry it out with a rag. Then wedge the outer fridge door & the inner freezer compartment doors open. It's OK to close it up after a few days or so once it's totally dry.

My 2007 25' Safari came with plastic devices that snap into the refrigerator and freezer door latches and hold the doors open when in storage. I believe they want to tell you to keep the doors open when not in use.

I have always left mine slightly cracked open after a thorough cleaning with a container of baking soda inside. Never had any odour issues in 25 years.

Ditto to George about the open baking soda box inside -- a new one!

Old sponges work great for wedging open BOTH the freezer door and the main door slightly. I leave a small electric fan running inside the trailer all winter on low to keep the air circulating, plus 1-3 Dampp Chasers plugged in (depending on trailer size). All drawers and cabinet doors also slightly ajar. Don't want any moist air trapped in areas which can get cold and cause condensation, mold mildew etc..

Info on Dampp-Chasers:

They work great!

Always open when off and stored, for me.

We use the Dometic supplied devices that go over each door latch and hold the door open with a small catch in the device.

We open all doors on the cabinets and bins, about halfway. The fridge is emptied, cleaned and wiped down with disinfectant cloth, if handy. Fridge and freezer doors are open full. This is whether it's idle for a few weeks or a couple months. I normally take it out of the storage lot and bring it home every couple of months to exercise the tires and do minor repairs.

So far, no critters no mold.
