Refrigerator scoop
I'm looking for a good used scoop for a 65 overlander, mine is cracked & missing a lot of the rivet flange... Thanks

If you mean the interior duct, exhaust from back of fridge to roof vent I couldn't find one. I had to rebuild my edges with fiberglass cloth and resin. Rolled the cloth around the edge to the inside. Used common "bondo" body filler for final smooth up. It worked, 5 yrs no spider cracks.

You're unlikely to find one in decent condition. I've made an assortment of them from aluminum sheet & buck rivets, so this might be an option for you. I believe Vintage Trailer Supply is in the process of tooling them now.

Thanks, I think I can repair this one easily enough with fiberglass mat, just a PITA! Better than the $300+ from the west coast vendor!

I've got one from a 1971 tradewind that I will part with if you think it will work.

Colin do you have any pictures of the scoop you made of sheet and buck rivets?
Thank you

Cochese, thank you for the link.
That is a very doable project for me.
It looks soooooo much nicer than the plastic too.
That is the reason I will not be putting the plastic bathroom back in the Caravel. I just cant stand the look of it.
However I do love shiney. Often times I've wondered if I was a raccoon in a previous life.

mine was cracked and broken in my 64 safari. My solution was to make the sides from the same maple wood I used on the cabinets, then use sheet aluminum that had been (jewel/engine turned) for the face. I think it turned out pretty good. You can use any wood and any metal sheeting you can find if you intend on painting it.

Okay I am not crazy about the plastic but after 2 weeks on patrol and c rats for the whole time plywood, plastic or even a 5 gallon bucket with a seat on it would have been a dream! We will dress it up a bit but keeping the crapper! And the sink!

Yes I said that! Or did I?

Wood should never be used as a chimney.
Sparks can and do rise from the Reefer burner.

A light coat of resin would take care of that and the aged plastic could not be much worse! Just my thoughts.

Andy, sparks, really? That's funny, please explain that. I have seen this type of vent on many AS's. As far as I know the burner is enclosed in a metal shroud and has an internal chimney around the heat exchange. How would there be any sparks? I only have a 3-way refer, propain, 110v ac, 12v dc. If I burned sticks I might believe there could be sparks. This is just a vent for the gas fumes to escape. Granted the fumes are warm/hot, but no where near hot enough for wood combustion 572 degrees Fahrenheit.

Take the cover off of the burner on an older reefer, and watch the sparks. A lot of them, no. But some, yes.
Safety can never be over practiced.

Batman that is VERY nice!
No paint for me. I will leave it exposed aluminum.
Not sure of finish yet though.

If anyone is concerned with the safty issue that Andy brought up. Just cut a piece of aluminum for each of the inside walls and screw them to the wood insides. Wango dango, spark proof. Hope this helps.
