range hood fan

In my 2005 Safari I have a ventline range hood fan. The motor is single speed rated at 12 volts 3 amp. Would like to make variable speed. I've seen other forums where people have installed resisters to lower the speed but would be nice to make it variable. Has anyone installed a variable speed control and how does it work?
