Xantrex TrueCharge RV in '73 Land Yacht

I am replacing the original Univolt in our 23' 1973 Land Yacht. The Univolt had the annoying buzz, and it wasn't charging the battery.

I spoke with Randy at bestconverter.com. He suggested the Xantrex XADC 60A over the Intellipower that I was originally looking at. I also ordered a new fuse panel.

I am using the diagram he suggested:

http://parallaxpower.com/Dist_Panl/FB%20Series.pdf

I've installed the converter and it's working fine, but I'm a little confused on how to wire in the blue tow vehicle battery connection. I assume it should be a fused connection, rather than being connected directly to the 12v feed side of the fuse panel. Is that right? The post is a bit small to accept the heavy gauge of the blue wire (looks to be about 10 ga). If so, what amperage?

Also, Randy said this converter has everything necessary to charge the battery built into it. I don't quite understand how it "knows" how to charge the battery, since it's just connected to the whole 12v system, alongside the lights and everything else. Do I need to do anything else besides connect it to the DC Positive Input side of the fuse panel, next to the 12v + output from the XADC?

Thanks,

Kurt

I'm not positive, and someone will correct me if I'm wrong...but I believe that the charge line has a self-resetting breaker in line, and its located up at the umbilical connection. The charge line in your tow vehicle is also fused. (40 amp, in my truck).
