Since Victron's shunt contains an electronics board, they MUST be mounted in a water proof location, unlike the shunts that Blue Sky and Bogart Engineering use in their battery monitors which can be placed outside exposed to the elements.

Also, the temperature probe is bolted directly to a positive battery terminal and the 2 wires coming from it are connected into the appropriate ports located on the Victron shunt so it will read the true cell temperatures at that battery post. This data is visible on the BMV-702 remote, which is located anywhere inside your RV via the data cable.

Hey Lew, how does it measure direct cell temp mounted on the battery post? That would be interesting.

Temperature is measured using a Thermistor, see link:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermistor

basically as temperature changes so does resistance.

Although Victron's shunt needs to be out of the elements I think it has some other advantages, the temperature sensor connects to the shunt and the shunt is connected between the negative side and your load. Then you run a single commonly available ethernet cable back to your BMV-702.

Based on the size of the metal mass connected to the cell under the positive terminal, the temperature at the post should be close enough to the cell temperature. There's a lot of metal there.

Here is a link with picture of the temp sensor.

The battery temperature probe is a thermistor, basically as temperature changes so does resistance.

One advantage the Victron shunt has is it's a single common ethernet cable back to the BMV-702 since the temperature probe connects to the shunt.

I also installed the 702 with bluetooth, and love it. Also have Victron MPPT with bluetooth, love it as well. I use the iphone app almost exclusively, have not hard mounted the 702 just yet.. can't decide on the final spot to cut a hole

I ordered a victron mppt 100/50 with Bluetooth cable - looking forward to installing it....

Do you get that much more info from the 702 to justify the extra $200? I was thinking I could just live with the info from the mppt itself... But I can be upsold on adding a 702 monitor brings that more more value - let me know your thoughts....

I would add the 702 and even go a step further with the new Color Control Monitor as well. They will give you more information that most can use, but it's great having information overload!

The power supply for the shunt electronics fasten to the positive battery with an inline fuse. Shouldn't the temperature probe fasten to the negative terminal? To avoid possible shorts.

Yes, it gives you more relevant info. The MPPT will tell you total watts and amps generated, the 702 will tell you the net input/output of amp draw going in/out of the batteries. It will also give you amp hours consumed, and a much more accurate state of charge. You can also have bluetooth for it as well, reading both from your app. I havent even permanently mounted the 702 yet, I just use the app.

For the BM-702 it is connected inline to the negative side, the temperature sensor is connected to the positive side.

See the quick installation guide for details:

Just to clarify:

The shunt is connected to the battery negative terminal with all negative loads attached to the other shunt terminal (there are 2 and they are marked) and the battery temperature sensor (BTS) for the 702 (it is for use in the 702 ONLY) is connected to the positive terminal. The 2 leads (red for positive and black for negative) coming from the BTS are inserted into the appropriate terminals on the shunt. The special BTS for the BMV-702 is purchased separately and is marked with a yellow label 'for use in 702 ONLY'.

Data is then transmitted to the BMV-702 via the data cable.

The Victron BTS differers from most others (Magnum, Blue Sky, Morningstar, Xantrex) in that it is connected to the positive battery terminal as opposed to the negative terminal that all the others use.

Victron also uses the ground side of the DC circuits as the control rather than the positive.
