I think so if the batteries are inside the trailer.

Some users forgo them if they are using AGM batteries. I personally think that is a bad idea because you can never go back to using flooded batteries once you make the switch.

I think it is a good idea even for AGMs. AGMs can out gas and a vented box is recommended.

required by code, even for AGM batteries as I understand it.

That is the kind of box that my 97 Safari came with - from the factory. So I'd assume it met code...

When I did a quick search before tossing in a comment, I found an add for the box pictured (Dyers) that asserted that it was in compliance with RVIA codes.

There is an Electronic Code of Federal Regulations online that has an interesting calculation for venting based on number of cells and energy capacity. There are a number of other interesting requirements on that page as well that sound reasonable but I don't know how they relate to RVIA codes. (TITLE 30 - MINERAL RESOURCES; CHAPTER I - MINE SAFETY AND HEALTH ADMINISTRATION, DEPARTMENT OF LABOR;SUBCHAPTER B - TESTING, EVALUATION, AND APPROVAL OF MINING PRODUCTS; PART 7 - TESTING BY APPLICANT OR THIRD PARTY;subpart c - BATTERY ASSEMBLIES; 7.44 - Technical requirements. [also at vLex])
