Post Univolt in 94 Excella

On my last outing in our AS we were in Texas in the mid afternoon heat and I noticed my lights dimming. Eventually, the AC quit, the frig quit, and everything associated with the 12 v system. The owner of the RV park came by and I asked him if he could figure out what my problem was. After looking around for about 20 minutes he said it must be my converter. He loaned me a HD battery charger and I hooked it up and everything went back to normal. I have a few quesitons:

1. What is the best way to make sure this is my problem?

2. Can I do this job myself, or is this not wise?

3. Should I go with the Airstream Univolt or change to something else?

afay,

Welcome to the Forums. All of the problems that you describe are based on a lack of 12VDC contrl voltage. That comes from 2 sources: your bateries and the Univolt that should keep them charged while connected to shore power. It seems that the Uni is not doing it's job. You can test the output with a multi meter to see if it is putting out 12VDC+ at it's output terminals.

That said and realizing that they don't do a proper job of charging batteries in the first place (IMHO), I would replace it ASAP. For a replacement, I would be sure to get a converter that has 3-stage battery charging like the WFCO or Iota brands. They can be purchased complete with a new fuse panel for all of the wires that are associated with your Univolt.

You should be able to do the replacement yourself, and you will find several threads dealing with the subject in the 'search' section of the Forum. Have fun!

why would the AC quit from a lack of 12vDC power?

If the A/C uses a remote wall mounted thermostat, it requires 12VDC to operate as control voltage. If it is just a basic 'local' roof mount, then the problem is 120VAC related and not the Uni, as the only power to the unit is 120VAC. In this case, a voltage trace should be performed to see why the A/C was not getting 120V to it when everything else died. Very difficult to diagnose completely without having been there when it happened.
