univolt help

Hello all,
I notice that my battery was taking a long time to re-charge and checked the univolt on my 1979 argosy. The univolt is only putting out 11 volts.
Is the univolt adjustable?
What should the univolt be putting out (volts)?
How many amps does the unvolt charge at?
Should I replace the univolt?
What replacement options are there?
Thanks,
mtnman

The univolt is only putting out 11 volts. BAD

Is the univolt adjustable? Not Manually, maybe not at all

What should the univolt be putting out (volts)? Depends upon manufacturer, but usually around 13.6volts, DC

How many amps does the unvolt charge at? That is dependant upon the actual Univolt or charger that is sitting there. They come in 30, 45, 60 and higher current outputs, but each converter is built to a certain capacity. You would use about 45 amps, unless you are running a lot of extra equipment from your battery.

Should I replace the univolt? Yes. Your's is done.

What replacement options are there? OEM from Inland RV, Intellipower, WFCO and IOTA cover about 99% of all converter replacements discussed on this forum. I have an IOTA and love it.

Thanks,
mtnman

Are you sure it's the Univolt and not a bad battery? If you've got a bad cell the voltage will only ever com up to 11 volts. One of the floating bulb battery testers will tell you if you have a bad cell; assuming it's a standard lead plate electrolyte battery. Otherwise you'll have to try charging it some other way. What voltate does it come up to aafter towing for a while?

Yes, its a new battery

What voltage does it come up to after towing for a while?
12.75 Volts from the meter after towing a ways.

AYRSTRM2,
45 amps sounds like a lot for a 1979 Argosy but if it will work thats what I want. I guess its nothing more than a better battery charger? Any certain place I can shop for this converter?

Thanks again,
mtnman

It most certainly will. Bestconverter.com also has good converter/chargers. Look them over and take you pick.

The Univolt that I have is really a 6.0 volt transformer with diodes and a ciruit that is a Voltage Doubler.
i would check the 1.0 microfarad AC capacitor, (you can get one from a electric motor repair shop Mine cost 4.95.
If it is leaky it will not help raise the voltage sufficiently. They are oil filled and do dry out
