Tubing in battery box

We still have 2 1970 trailers and both have the small round vent below the light above the lincese plate. What I want to know is what is the small plastic tube that hangs down from the vent? Was there a vent in the original batteries or something else it hooked to? Not that seems like a big enough vent.

Originally, there was a plastic cover, that completely covered the top of the battery.

That clear plastic hose, connected to that cover.

The purpose was to allow the gases from the charging battery, to escape to the exterior, instead of being trapped within the trailer.
