I was thinking about mounting the shunt externally on the battery box in its own metal enclosure. I was also considering mounting a master battery disconnect switch here. Thoughts?
My thinking on this is the fact that I don't want something getting potentially red hot next to my battery. And for obvious reasons the disconnect switch.

The shunt will never get "red hot" unless you have some kind of a short.
It is hard to find a place for the shunt and an external disconnect switch near the battery box which is jammed in between the frame rails and the trailer body and gas tanks. I would have liked to put a disconnect Perko type switch on mine, but could not find any place to mount it.
Your shunt is not going to get hot. Especially if its the 500 amp that I recommend. Even the 100 won't over heat as long as your charge current doesn't exceed 70 Amps. 400 for the 500 amp shunt.
The shunt won't get hot and since it is in the negative lead there is not a real reason to go to great length to box it as if it were to short to ground no harm would be done, just erroneous readings.
I originally had mine right at the battery terminal. Later moved it to outside the battery box when neatening up my wiring. I also changed from the 500 amp shunt to 100 amp shunt for more accurate readings.

What's the best position for the shunt location so I'm reading Both batteries? Another poster placed his between the batteries, which looked to me to just read one battery.
