My ' 79 Sovereign seems to be missing something on the battery box door. There is a large gap around the door, from one end of the hinge to the other end. It goes up & around the door hatch & back down. Its more than .25". Its located curb side right up front. Looks like it will let all kinds of wind, rain debris, etc. in, while under way. Isn't something supposed to make this a little more resistant to the elements?Looks like it could be a problem.

Should there be some kind of a gasket or flange there? I can't tell from the O. M. what is missing.

Help??

When you open the door, can you slide your batt out on to a plastic shelf mounted to the back side of the door.

I have a 79 Soveriegn with two battery boxes. There are no gaskets or plastic on the doors. Possibly for ventillation.

ALBERTA CLIPPER!!! We are in the middle of one. Lots of wind and snow and stuff like that there.

I never thought about the venilation factor, still that's an awful big gap that would let a lot of moisture in while towing into a wind when it is raining.

On my 84 Sovereign, the battery compartment is a one piece, completely sealed plastic box..The only area for ventilation.per si, is the gap under the bottom side of the door. I'd never worry about anything getting in..In fact, I'd worry more if it was closed up too tight, as this would prevent battery "gases" from escaping~! KWIM??

I guess that is the logical answer. Still.........it just seems to not look just right.

My 75 has gasketing around the door, needs replacing of course!. The battery is also on the sliding plastic tray. I haven't looked to see what the ventilation allowances are...maybe they didn't require venting in 1975 I would think there would be at least some gasketing to keep the door from vibrating and scrubbing on it's frame and wearing out.

It just looks .....not right...you know? A gasket was my first thought. It is a small thing, but annoys me. Someone has a definitive answer, I'm sure.

I lied to you My batttery door doesn't have a gasket, it has a couple of rubber bumpers. The Service Manual shows a gasket around the door. So either there was a manufacturing change that never made the manual or? Mine shuts tight, and doesn't rattle, if any water was to get inside it wouldn't make any difference because the entire compartment in lined in plastic and caulked in place.

I would definitely want something to seal around the door. The 63 I am doing a shell off restoration on had a 1ft x 2ft hole rotted through the floor under the battery box. The frame kept the battery from falling down into the belly pan.

Do you have an adress for obtaining a service manual for my ' 79 Sov. ? It sure would help. I havn't done an archive search. There could be one there.

Skip -- You should be able to assess your window, door, and fridge/battery access gaskets even before you find a service manual. Are they brittle and cracked? Look at www.inlandrv.com/parts and you very well may be able to find your year and model. Make up an order but talk to Andy first -- I found I was shorting myself on some of the materials.

And don't forget the 2 plumbing roof vents -- those rubber gaskets go south too.

Yeah, my other gaskets seem to be in pretty good shape. I will probably replace some, but I hate to get one the vents when there are no leaks. 'Course the other side is .......do you want to wait until it leaks or pick your time to replace it.

I just sold a ' 73 international 31' with what appeared to be the original seals,gaskets, etc.....no leaks. However, needed everything else...just more than I wanted to do..
