Talking Running Univolt W/ Out Battery

I have heard that running the univolt without a battery in the circuit is bad. Can anyone tell me if this is in fact true? Seems to work fine without but am I going to burn out my univolt? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The battery acts as a regulator for the univolt.

Running it without a battery will cause excessive voltage, therefore short lived bulbs.

Also, the first line voltage surge your trailer has will result in the univolt going "south" permanently.
