Unhappy new power supply now tripping GFI

I just installed a new 45 amp 9200 series power supply about three days ago and it worked good to start.I went out to trailer today and the 12 volt power was off.I checked and the GFI was triped,so I reset and it retriped I checked the trailer plubs and nothing was plug in.So I pulled a cord from outside and pluger it in and it works .Is possibily my GFI bad or will the power supply work on a GFI

Run an extension cord to another plug and see what you get.

I am not sure what Power Supply you are using but in general. Any electrical device, radio, tv, mixer, ect that has a filter capacitor across the input before the transformer or speed controller will blow a GFI and there is no way to stop it short of removing the cap.

The charging current into the cap makes the GFI think there is a problem.

Most newer devices have worked around this.

Angry GFI tripping

Well I ran cord out side and it worked good.I went out about four hours later and unpluged from the outside cord and pluged it in to the trailer again and it did not trip it, is still charging this morning. What gives?I am thinking of changing the GFI out just to be on the safe side.

is the GFI that tripped in your house or your trailer?

I know I can't operate my TV and antenna at home when I'm plugged into my garage power, which is GFI protected. I took the TV back when this first occured and bought another. It did the same thing. Apparently on mine its the connection of the coax to the antenna that flips the ground fault. This happened on my Safari, and it happens on the Classic. Never have a problem in a campground although I'm not sure if I've ever connected to a GFI protected circuit other than at home.

Has it been raining during any of these problems? Are you sure you wired the new power supply for correct polarity and good ground conection?

Just ideas....

There is something in the Power Supply, most likely a capacitor, that is hitting the GFI when the Power Supply cycles.

There is no reason for the Power Supply to be on a GFI circuit so to solve your problem wire a new 110 outlet or rewire the current outlet to another circuit that is not on the GFI.

Hi Housebg. I just bought a pd9245c to install in my 81 excella. The Intellipower pd9200 series owners manual says "Intellipower 9200 has the LOWEST ground fault leakage. With this unit, the user can confidently utilize the RV's AC outlets without being concerned about a ground fault interruption of the facilities power source".
I think I would consider replacing the GFI before running a new line, however I wanted you to know what the poeple at Progressive Dynamics has to say in the manual.. there phone # is 269-781-4241 in Marshall, MI

I will be watching this post with interest, and will let you know If I experience same problems.

If it is not a major ordeal to get the converter on a differant circuit I would do that. Also, the GFI may be weak and need replacing. GFI's are funny. I always try to get everything that is not suppose to be on that circuit off of it.

Hi Housegb, I just installed my PD9245, and it works with one 12 volt battery, but blows 15 amp gfci if I add second battery, but it works ok with 2 batteries if I plug it into 15 amp gfi in my garage. Manufacturer Progressive Dynamics help line says my AS 15 amp gfci is weak, replace it, so that is my next move.

Just to clarify, the manufacturer thinks it is the 15 amp breaker is weak, not a gfi type of problem.

We just had a new converter installed in our 77 Argosy and are having the exact same problem. The converter works fine on all outlets except the one that trips the 15 amp GFCI breaker.

I removed the 15 amp GFCI and had a look at it, but I didn't see a way to disconnect the wires from the breaker. Does the breaker have to be taken apart to disconnect the wires?

We solved the problem. We removed the GFCI and replaced with a regular 15 amp breaker. Converter works great.

GFI are great when they work . I have found most fail when you need them . Get rid of the GFI and you will solve the problem. Even brand new ones can be bad.

Not sure that was a good idea. If the GFI was suppling any of the plugs within 3 feet of any of the plumbing you have put your self at risk.

If that was the case consider putting the GFI back and running a separate circuit to the converter on a separate braker.

I have not done anything yet, because there are three plugs in the living area of my AS, the middle plug, directly under the window, is on the GFCI, so i moved my power supply to one of the plugs not in the GFCI, working ok. Because the bathroom is on the GFCI, I don't want to replace it with a regular breaker, so I am going to see how difficult it is to run a new wire from one of the other living room plugs to the one nearest the power supply. I am also using a GFCI on my cable where it plugs into the supply for the AS, as additional protection, and it does not blow.

Housebg, I couldn't tell from the discussion if you are plugging the power supply/converter into a GFI outlet or a circuit fed by a GFI breaker. That said I don't understand why you wouldn't just plug the converter into a regular outlet, i.e. no GFI. The GFI is designed to protect the user from shock in areas that might be wet where the user might inadvertently touch a water pipe, faucet, spilled water, etc. The GFI protects the user from electrocution. I don't think a power supply needs a GFI to operate properly nor would the power supply link its DC output circuits in such a fashion that a shock potential to a user of the 12 volt lights and appliances would exist.

I am sure how I can say this and make it clear other than there is no reason for a power supply to be on a GFI circuit. In fact as I mentioned before there are reasons not to have the power supply on a GFI circuit.

Some lawyer working for Airstream that was taught in school that electricity was BAD made the discussion requiring them to install the power supply that way. The world was much better of when engineers not social scientists and lawyers could design things.

As far as the power supply working on one battery and not on two the increased load on the power supply has most likely caused the ground current that causes the GFI to trip to go beyond the trip point.

Sorry if I offended any social scientists.
