Mystery smell ???

On my last 2 trips out, around the 3rd day of use I (the AS) starts to develop a smell...I know this is going to sound strange but it seems to be coming from the battery compartment/ the batteries. At first I thought it was a septic gas smell, but there was now septic smell at the vent pipe or the toliet area...Then I thought it was a propane gas leak, but it didnt really smell like propane...I stuck my head down by the battery compartment and the smell was very strong...opened the battery compartment and the smell got stronger...the batteries were also warm to the touch. They are 5 year old, deep cycle rv batteries and they hold very little charge anymore...could the smell be coming from them and are my batteries fried or better yet, frying themselves?
Any thoughts would be helpful
Dave

If you were on shore power, the batteries may have been over charging.

Generator / shore power is the same. Since you know the batteries are shot, you need to replace them first. Then you need to monitor the output of the converter to see if it steps down when the batteries are charged.

You cooked one or both of the batteries. The smell you smell is sulfur as the batteries boil.

Remove the batteries and check the water level. One or both will be very low in at least one cell.

You may want to wash down the front of the trailer to remove any acid residue.
