Lookee at the 'univolt' I found in my '75 Safari

All--

I'm starting to feel a bit like a archaelogist digging down through layers of Airstream PO sediment. I though it would be a good idea to hook up to power so I could work on the interior after sunset. The battery was 2-3 years old and boiled (dry plates) so I yanked it, and decide to do a quick visual inspection of the system. Call me cautious.

Battery is toast... Check!
Power cable... Check!
AC Fuse box... Check!
DC distribution box... Check!
Univolt... what the heck?

But it was only set to 12A charge, not 75A "Battery Boost".

Looks like you need a new 'Univolt'........3-stage electronic power converter.... that is.

Look at the bright side: How many others can jump start their tow vehicle with their Univolt?
Randy (68overlander on the forums) at Bestconverters.com should be able to get you a good converter that won't boil your battery dry while charging the neighbor's truck...

Yes... I talked with Randy shortly after posting. He looked at the picture on the forum... there was a pause... and "You *really* need to get that out of there". I ordered the Xantrex XADC 60A and a 30A panel.

I was think of buying a "jump" charger anyway... now I have one. ;^)

Yes, I'm just posting to share the entertainment value. If I wasn't planning on tossing everything anyway... that discovery could have been irritiating.

I'm still tring to figure out something cool to do with the Star Trek era "master control center". It's too lame to toss.

You could put a bunch of lighted push buttons and toggle switches on it. They wouldn't do anything, but you could impress your friends with the christmas tree...

Replace it with a Flux Capacitor!

Who needs roads?

Maybe I could install a cover and put a flux capacitor in it... and then use it for drink holder on the coffee table... with lots of switches, of course.

Randy's package just arrived... but haven't even opened it since my garage door decided to fall apart this moring. I think I have that crisis adverted... but I've still got more Silicone to scrape.

That said... does anyone have any recommendation on where to mount the new xantrex XADC? I got the 30A power disti panel as well.

Either in the original Univolt location, or somewhere near the battery. Up to a point, the shorter the run from converter to battery, the better.
