Lithium batteries - removing from trailer for storage time

Hello,

As you know lithium batteries (in fact not only lithium type of batteries) do not like the heat.

Does is make sense / is it feasible to have the batteries connected with Anderson type of connector and take them home when the trailer is in storage? I guess the temperature inside the trailer on a sunny day may reach around 100F or more.

200 Ah weights around 55 lbs, so it is lift-able.

In a quick search it appears that storage at 50% of charge is more important than storage temperature and long term storage was defined as 1 year or more.

The best storage temperature is at 25C so you are correct keeping the temperature down would help maintain the state of charge.

If you are stored outside it will get much hotter than 100 degrees on bright sunny california day. Get or borrow and IR thermometer and use it and the heat/AC temp button to see what you are getting for temps.

3. How should Li-ion Batteries be stored ?
Our batteries have characteristics of very low self-leakage rate, ~ 3% per month, which allows batteries to be stored over extended period of time. Batteries are to be charged to 40-60% full and disconnect all loads before long term storage. Batteries must be stored in cool temperature environment. Avoid batteries being exposed to summer heat. Users are recommended to check cell voltages periodically, e.g. every 2 weeks, to ensure proper voltage level. If cell voltage drops close to 3.0V or under 3.0V, battery needs to be recharged.

And on Temps:
Proper operating temperature ranges are -20 to 65C for discharging and 0 to 65C for charging. Not operating and storing batteries within these temperature ranges can result in damages to the batteries.

You didn't mention brand but whichever brand should have information for their models.

If you decide to make them portable make sure you get PowerPoles that will support the load into your inverter/trailer requirements.

Thanks Guys! I will be buying GBS cels from Starlight Solar, Elite Power distributor.

The inverter will be 2800W. Am I right in thinking that 350 Amp Anderson Powerpole Kit should be enough?

I would think the SB350 connectors are a bit overkill unless you are using all 2800 watts of the inverter for long periods...the smallest cable is 2/0 size (450 amp rating) & it's not to flexable...

The SB 175's will accomodate 1/0 size cable (360 amp rating) which is much more user-friendly in connector size & flexabilty...

The 175's relate to about 2100 watts in a 12 volt system...but I don't think you'd have any over heating problems....

I've used the SB 50's on my 1500 watt inverter for years without coming close to heated contacts...and that relates to 600 watts in a 12 V system... Use it all the time with micro wave oven...

I may want to use AC for a short period of time... would SB 175 be sufficient for the task?

That would work. Remember to leave enough cable slack for connect/disconnect. Those 0 cable are very stiff.
