Inverter/ smart charger set up

I was checking the water to make sure none was needed and I wanted to make sure I put in back together correctly. The batteries are about 5 yrs old and don't seem to be holding a charge. Maybe its's time to replace them? I have a 2000 watt power inverter ( I know a little over kill, but is was on sale, better to have more than not enough, right ) along with a inteli-power charger 9200 series, with a smart charger. Here is how it's currently set up for the 12v system.

INVERTER WIRES
2 negative wires coming off the inverter going to 1 battery ( see pic 1 )
1 each of the positive wires going to each battery (see pic 2 )

CHARGER
2 negative wires going to battery 2 oppisite of the inverter
1 each positive wires going to each battery

Thanks for the help.

Robert

The setup is fine, but I would also have the batteries hooked up in parallel. Right now I don't see the batteries hooked up together at all.

That is good to know. When hooking them up parallel, I would add a wire from positive to positive and negative to negative and what gauge of wire should I use? Should there be any type of fuse between the two?

Thaks again,
Robert

I would use 8 or 6 gauge wire when hooking up in parallel. Yes, connect them positive to positive then negative to negative. A fuse is not necessary for parallel connections, though I would have one on the positive terminals for both your inverter and charger unit.

Do you think since the batteries are not holding a charge I should replace them? The batteries are 5 yrs old. I know with car batterise this is about the life span, but with deep cycle and not using them that much I would assume they would last longer. Or should I take them to the local auto parts store and have them checked?

It depends on how your batteries were used and maintained. If they were kept charged and properly maintained, batteries can last up to 7 years. I would say if the water levels were good in each cell and they still aren't holding a charge then it's time for new batteries. Buy 27s as opposed to 24s.

The batteries were used sparingly thru out their life time. We have gone out probably 100 times or so over the last 5yrs. when at home the trailer was always plugged into shore power and being monitored by the smart charger.

the current batteries I have are 29s. Is this over kill? We don't opperate much more than lights and the laptop.

Thanks,
Robert
