inverter/converter

I have a 1972 Soverign with original inverter (I think it's called) it is making a lot of buzzing noises, does this mean It is going bad? Also How do I tell what to replace it with? what is best for the long run?

If it's original, it's best just to scrap it and start with a new one. Check out Progressive Dynamics 9260. It can be had for around $100.

edit: well damn, maybe not. I bought mine of eBay back in August for $118 shipped, but it appears they've ballooned up to at least $145 now.

You have a univolt in your 72. Scrap it. There are much better inverters out there and what you pay for the inverter you will save in battery costs. Also, you need to be on the regular threads not the Vintage Kin. I also have a 72 and would be happy to discuss it with you.

The thing that it came with is a CONverter-charger.

An INverter produces 120v AC from a DC source (12v batteries in our case).

The old Univolt converters and even very recent Parallax converters have single-stage output, so they're not kind to batteries in the long run. Modern, affordable converters are available that provide 3- and 4-stage output to charge and maintain batteries more effectively and prolong battery life compared to the old-tech ones. Popular brands of reliable converters are Iota and Progressive Dynamics.

I'll move this thread to the electrical section where it belongs.
