Well, I will be buying a decent battery charger this time. I am personally familiar with IOTA, since that's what's on our sailboat, but would appreciate any advice on the easiest three stage charger/converter to replace the thing Airstream supplied.

Since I also have to buy a couple of new batteries, I would also appreciate recommendations on what will fit into the little battery box behind the propane tanks. I modified it two years ago by cutting the sheet metal so I could go to the next size up on the batteries. I am limited in height, though, so I can't go with taller batteries.

I have an IOTA 55. It was installed by the local Airstream dealer soon after I purchased the trailer. It was an easy fit for them and I have been pleased with the performance. I am going on 6 years on the current batteries and will be looking at replacements probably this year.

2 of the Lifeline GPL-27T 12VDC @100 amp/hours each will fit easily if you rotate them 90 to the trailer center axis and will give you a total battery capacity of 200 amp/hours. Also, the Progressive Dynamics PD-4655 is a direct replacement for your Parallax OEM unit...right down to the screw mounts that hold on the faceplate of the power center.

While any converter is not an IDEAL battery charging system for many reasons, the PD-4655 will certainly do an adequate job.

Thanks, Lewster. I've been looking into it, and apparently no Lifeline dealers anywhere around here. They list a Batteries and Bulbs place here as a dealer, but they don't seem to carry them. Not even listed on their website.

So, the main game in this town is definitely Interstate. I have two of their deep cycle 27's which are less than two years old. Deader'n Dillingers Dick, too. I'll just buy two more and a proper converter and pay more attention next winter. I'll totally disconnect them from the trailer and put one of the little solar 12 volt chargers on them. I would think that would trickle them okay, especially if I leave them hooked up in parallel but disconnected from anything else. Plenty sunlight here in the winter ( northern Colorado)

The Progressive Dynamics C/C looks good. I'll be ordering one of those this week. I am also okay with IOTA's just installed two on our catamaran last year. But the Progressive Dynamics is a direct replacement for the single stage thing in the Airstream, saving me a lot of fabrication and refuddlement issues. That makes that decision easy.

Thanks for the help.

Why not just order online and have them shipped to your door in a matter of days? No need to settle for local selection....

amazon.com
batteryguys.com
BatteryStuff.com
sepbatteries.com
etc.

Good idea, except for Amazon. I stopped using Amazon couple years ago. You cannot specify shipping carrier you want with Amazon and it caused me a lot of grief as we move around a lot. If I want to pick something up at the nearest Fed Ex office, for example, I've had Amazon ship via UPS or USPS. Whoops, sorry. Didn't mean to get off on my anti amazon rant...

And I don't exactly have a "door" to ship them to, at the moment. and need them day after tomorrow.

Seven months and the batteries ran down? That's not unusual. Even in store mode the LP detector is on.

On my last Airstream the Interstates lasted 7 years, this one is on four and still fine. In storage, I connect a "smart" charger to the batteries.

I'd love to be able to connect a charger over the winter, but it's not really an option in the open storage lot. Solar might be a way to go next season, I'm looking into that.

And I will definitely disconnect the batteries from the trailer circuit completely this time around. I'm planning to buy another set of Interstate 27s this time around. This set lasted two summers, and one winter. Maybe with a better charger, disconnecting from trailer, and a solar top up I'll have better luck.

And if I could just walk into a store Monday morning and buy a set of the Lifelines, I would.

Thanks to everyone for the info and suggestions.

depending on where you live I bet Randy at bestconverter.com can get you lifeline batteries in a few days.

in deciding on waiting a few days to get lifeline agm or interstate do you self a favor and go lifeline or if cost is an issue get Trojan or costco golf cart batteries seem to get a good review around here.

As always....YMMV!!!

I joined this forum to learn more about our Airstream. I appreciate your input (and will upgrade our batteries and charging system in the future).
