Post How to connect battery in AS 1972 overlander

Can anyone tell us what we need to connect the battery to the AS 1972 overlander land yatch. We have no idea what else we need. We are new to the AS family. I have attached two pictures!

The trailer originally came with an inline battery connector, of which, you only have one side. There are other connectors available you can replace the one you have with. I don't think the original connector is still available. The only thing it did was make the battery removal easier in that you did not have to reach into the battery compartment to loosen and remove the battery connector bolts. The newer trailers do not have the inline connector.

Welcome to the forum.

Is the flat, braided object at the right side of your photo metal? If so, it's probably the negative side of the battery hookup. If it is not, you need to locate, or install new, a ground cable for the negative side of your battery.

You need to install new connectors that fit your battery on both the positive and negative leads (wires or braided ground cable) in your trailer. The positive cable has to be insulated, but the ground can be the sort of bare, braided cable that I think I see. Ground is attached to the metal trailer frame anyway.

Your friendly local auto supply store can probably sell you the proper connectors. There are two types that will work with the battery you have.

To prevent shorts and possible fire while working with the battery cables, always install the positive lead first, then the negative. Removal is the opposite, always remove the negative first.

The black and red wires are the negative and positive leads respectively. Cut the existing connector off and install the appropriate sized eyelets on the wires. Then use the bolt and nut on the battery as the connection point. Black=negative. Red=positive.

The stock battery I believe is a Group 27 deep cycle battery.

You could also go to a batteries plus store that can provide you with some length of cable and the correct fittings or ends to connect to the battery terminals.

I have a '74 Argosy 26'. It takes a group 24.
Measure the battery compartment. Height: Width: and Depth. You will need a 12 volt battery. Deep Cycle batteries are recommended.

OK so now we bought the eyelets and the original black and red wires are not long enough to reach the battery. Can we replace the original wires or extend them some how?

If you like to dry camp install a group 31, or 2 deep cycle marines. If you do install two connect them parallel not in series. If you want to make sure 1 bad cell doesn't ruin both batteries install an isolator.

Replace. Splices are just another place that could cause problems in the future. Be sure to use the appropriate sized wires.
