Help to remove converter

We have a 1975 landyacht which needs a converter repair would like to know how to get the old thing out

1. Disconnect battery(ies)
2. Unplug old converter from 120 volt AC receptacle
3. Disconnect leads to 12 volt DC fuse panel
4. Remove ground wire
5. Remove attaching screws
6. Remove and discard old converter*
7. Install new converter using same steps in reverse
* Some portion of the weight of the old Univolts is the copper winding. It can be sold for scrap or recycled.

P.S. You do not repair these things, you replace them with an Iota or a Progressive Dynamics converter-charger.

Thanks, but the Univolt is tucked inside the closet next to the bathtub with no room on either side to get any tools and it seems to be bolted where I can't reach

You may just have to leave it there after disconnecting everything, is there room to install a new in the same area.

There should be one accessible screw holding the unit into the floor.
Unscrew it.
Then slide the unit away from the remaining screw, which will be in a screw slot versus a screw hole.
That's how they got it in there.
Otherwise, you may have to remove a wall panel

P.S. Be brave big fella. I've replaced five or six, and they all came out sooner or later

Alumaholic, read your above posted reply in reference to converter replacement. First and foremost let it be said up front that I do not know anything about this subject and I would like to ask a question of you.

I have heard that the Progressive Dynamics (PD 9260CU) 60 Amp power converter is the best one to purchase, I have also heard that the WFCO (WF9855) deckmount 55Amps is the best converter. What's your advice. I have a 1969 21ft Globetrotter with the original converter still in it, and it quit working. Thanks for any input.

Regarding different models of converters, Randy at Best Converter, an Airforums Commercial member, has helped many people in the past. Since it's his business, he has current info on a lot of different models...

I would add one thing regarding removal of the original Unitvolt.

There is a small board near the fuses, called the shunt, that allows the tank indicator lights (found on the device in the locker above your stove) to operate. Suggest you remove and save that device until you decide if you want to make an effort to have the tank indicators working.

I would add that those indicators (that supposedly give you the fill state of the black, grey and fresh water tanks) are famous for not working. But without the shunt on the Univolt, or some other circuit that will do the job, they cannot work.

Actually, the shunt wires operate the ammeter, not the tank gauges.If you look at my images, you'll see how I cabbaged up a combo old/new fuse box set up when I changed to a new converter. Hope this helps.....Phil.
