Exposed battery terminals

Whenever I slide the batteries out for checking the levels I am very concious that the live terminal gets very close to the bodywork of the trailer. I have terminal connections where a bolt secures the cable to the terminals, and these protrude from the normally available terminal protectors. I have tried adapting these to gain more protection, but without much success. Yesterday I purchased a set of snap-on snap-off battery disconnects which solve this issue completely by flipping a plastic cover over the connection system, and leave no metal exposed on the terminals. The product is "Quick Caps Battery Disconnects" by WirthCo, item # 20158.

I'm always fascinated by these cam-over self-tightening knee-action wedgie mechanisms.

Who comes up with these ideas?

Thanks for the tip!

I had the same concerns - my battery terminals nearly touch the metal lid of the battery box.

I like your solution - in my case, I bought a sheet of rubber from Ace Hardware roughly the dimensions of the two batteries and place it on the batteries before closing the lid. It doesn't always stay in place and the sheet was rather expensive - $12? - maybe more.

my simple solution is to install the batteries into the box positive terminals first.

when you slide them into the battery box connect the negative side after the positive terminals are safely inside. do the reverse for removal.

no chance of an accidental fire/explosion.

I would insulate the box. Epoxy some insulating material such as rubber, vinyl, or even glass, to the box seems cheapest.

i have batteries with the posts in the center of the battery. i use a flat piece of the impossible-to-open packaging, so often used these days. i slide it in when i need to slide the battery out so i don't melt the battery door frame with the + post.

I had an old '75 Plymouth Volare whose battery used to bounce around under the hood. Every once in a while it would touch the hood. It sure was a pretty blue color at night. I put a small rubber floor mat from the rear seat of a car over the top. No more sparks. You might be able to find a mat at a junk yard cheap or out of an old car your selling.
