Drop-in Victron Lithium Batteries

For those who are interested in drop-in Lithium options, Victron has now entered the market with their new SuperPack LiFePO4 batteries with integrated BMS.

They come in 50ah, 100ah and 200ah variants. Pricing is in the ballpark of other drop-in Lithium options such as battleborns.

No other system components are necessary, other than to ensure your charging source delivers 14.2v bulk and 13.5v float charge voltages.

Happy boondocking.

Charge operating temps: 5C (41F) to 45C (113F).

That's a pretty limited temperature range. Better not drop it into the exterior battery box if one wants to use it in varied conditions.

That’s a nice battery. I have had my eye on the relion lithium battery with a wider charging and use range. Looks like it can be safely charged down to -4 F. The website is showing 10% off right now.

That’s pretty cool - it has an integrated heating element to raise the battery temperature in cold weather, bringing the cells themselves up to > 0C, enabling them to take a charge. Just like my Tesla

Aren't they all drop in? Not trying to be smart but not sure what that means. Integrated BMS means internal and not accessible to the end user? They are all that way except the ones Airstream dealers are using. The Expion Vipers have an external BMS that is serviceable and is packed in a group 24 battery case with 20 more amp hours.

Drop-in Victron Lithium Batteries

Drop in = non serviceable, internal BMS and no networking capability.

Victron’s mainline LiFePO4 batteries have external BMS and network to other Victron equipment through proprietary protocol. You cannot just drop them in, at a minimum they require an external BMS to operate.

Pros and cons to both approaches.

It would be great if companies would publish the equivalent group size for these 'drop in' replacements. They are not going drop in if they don't fit in.

I realize the dimensions are given in mm but not everyone is savvy at doing the conversion. Even then, who knows the overall dimensions of a group 27, group 31 or GC2 size lead acid battery?

I was at NAPA today to get a 1 3/8" open end wrench which they did not have in stock. It took the counter help nearly 5 minutes to come up with a metric equivalent which at that size probably would have worked for me. I had to bite my tongue to keep from saying 'google it'.

All the best,
Hein

WolframAlpha App is great for conversions FYI.

About to install your roof rack towers on the Transit, Hein. Nice work!
