How do I test if my univolt is working at all or working properly?

The only true failure is the failure to try.

If you have a volt meter check the output should be better than 13.4 VDC
Then check the AC ripple should be less than 300mV AC. If not you caps are dried out and they should be replaced. Better yet replace the "Old Battery Boiler" with a new multi-stage charger.
Second way, unhook the battery and see if the lights work and are bright.

What multistage charger would you suggest? Do you mean unhook the battery when I am hooked up to tow vehicle or land line?

Unhook when you are on shore power. I personally like the inteli-power 9100 or the 9200 45 amps or bigger. Faster charge time. Take a look at RV Power Converter/Chargers and see what you think.

No, the quick and dirty Univolt function test is to disconnect the battery, plug in the trailer, and see if the lights come on. If they do, it does.
I would second Gary's suggestion for a new converter. I like the Intellipower we have, I got it from Randy (68overlander) at Best converters (BestConverter - Converters, Inverters, Electrical Supplies, Electronics)

Thanks very much for the input,I will look into it right away. I can't wait to get it out of the storage yard and get working again, been a couple months and I am going through withdrawal.
