converter shuts down

I have the original converter in my 1976 Tradewind. Most of the time it operates good if not a little underpowered. I try to not use too much DC power when on shore with no battery. If I over do it, the converter shuts down. The best way I have found to restart it is to unplug it for a while, turn all lights off, and keep trying plugging it back in. Eventually it will start working again.
Does everyone have this kind of power or is something broken?
This is something that is more annoying than anything, and I can just live with it. Unless someone's figured a better way.

The converters of that vintage were rather poorly filtered. They depended on the battery to filter and regulate the output power. A decent battery is the first step.

Several reasons it could fail: transformer shorting, rectifier failing, capacitors getting weak.

A replacement of both converter and battery is probably the shortest and best path.

Nearly 40 years is pretty good service.

JD

If you don't plan to tow the coach. Just install a new converter. A battery is not necessary.
If you tow it, a battery is a must for the break away switch.
