converter replacement

Hi:
I have an Airstream Excella 1993 25'.

I would like to replace the old comverter with a solid state mulit-stage

one, so I do not need to turn on and off the off-on switch guessing when

the batteries are charged.

Any name brand models and numbers, or experence come to mind anyone?

Thanks,

John Bran

John, Welcome to the forums.

I installed an InteliPower 9245 in my 75 Trade Wind. It is a 3 stage converter which has a small indicator to tell you what stage the converter is in. I chose the 45 amp model because I have only one battery in my trailer. A 9260 (60 amp) would be the correct size for a two battery setup. I have been very pleased with the performance of this unit and it is very quiet.

Randy at Bestconverters.com is very helpful. Email or call, he carries several brands.

I have (will have) Inteli-Power(s)

I know that looks confusing. I have an older 45 amp Inteli-Power in my '67 Trade Wind that I put in somewhere around 10 years ago or more. I have been very pleased with it. I just got a new Inteli-Power9280 from Randy at Best Converter (9200 Series) to replace the 70 amp Univolt in my Excella.

It may be a bit of overkill, but I expect it to last for many years if the one in my Trade Wind is any example and will certainly handle anything I can throw at it. The 9280 is also 3ĹĒ longer than the 9270 or 9260. This gives it substantially more heat sink that should, at least it seems to me, allow the cooling fan to run less under most conditions. Excess capacity and less noise (at least in theory).

This Univolt is still working (HUMMMMMM!!!), but I have bad memories about the old oneís failure. I plan to install the new Inteli-Power tomorrow. More info to come.

I also have an Intellipower (4655) 4 stage charger I recently installed to replace a WFCO 3 stage charger which barely lasted 2 years (wouldn't you know it died just past the warrantee period).

I am very happy with the Intellipower converter so far. The clincher for me is the 4th stage desulfation mode, which eliminated the need to purchase a separate desulfator.
