Converter fan noise - parallax vs others

Folks, I have the stock Parallax converter. The fan kicks on even with light loads, sometimes at night. This offends the sensibilities of people sleeping on the gaucho.

Do the more modern converters run the fan as well or are they more quiet?

I installed a new Inteli-Power last October. The gaucho is still out, so there is nothing blocking any sound from it. I have to shine a flashlight on the fan to see if it is running.

I have been researching converters as I need one myself to replace a Univolt. The new models made an on demand fan. The bigger the load, the higher the fan speed and vise versa. Keeps things quiet at night. I have talked with Randy at Bestconverter.com and he is now recommending the Iota brand.

Curious, I spoke to Randy at Bestconverter today about updating to a multiple phase charging system from my Magnatek and he recommended a PDI 4655. I ordered one based upon his recommendation. Maybe it just fits better in the cabinet. jc

I usually recommend the Iota DLS series or PD 9200 for deck mounted Univolts/converters but the Parallax 7300 series that Airstream started using is a different set up. They are combination units (AD/DC distribution centers and power converter all in one) so the PDI 4600 series makes more sense because of the ease of installation. One could also use the Iota and gut the bottom section like we used to do with the PD units and that would be ideal but the upgrade kits are a little less work.
