Bummed... No Parallex 5300 series upgrade available.

So, I purchased a PD4655 for my Classic as an upgrade and upon attempting the install, The directions didn't match the wiring.

I gave up and started searching and returned the PD4655.

The 2016 Classic, at least mine, has a Parallex 5300 series or 5355.

I searched the web and could not find an upgrade to a 4 stage charger available, anywhere.

Do more knowledgeable and experienced Airstreamers have any suggestions. If a 4 stage upgrade is on the market??

Thanks

The 4655 doesn't fit the 555 or new 5355 and there is no direct kit however you can still get a 4 stage charger like the Boondocker. I can't post a direct link but you can look for it. Many owners of the 5355 have already done it and it was actually a member here that sent in the photos. Essentially you need a hard wire deck mount converter like the Boondocker 60 and you can reuse your existing fuse board and attach it direct to the new converter. Works great and you get 4 stage charging and much better battery maintenance especially if you store your Airstream with hook-ups. Good luck.

Thanks for responding 66Over,

I saw the Boondocker but it looked complicated just through quick browsing.

Please send or post the links and I will delve more into it.

We are full-timeers so I think I would like an 4 stage upgrade.

Randy or any one else, can the PD9260C be used in the same way and is there a reason to prefer the Boondocker over Progressive Dynamics? I have a 2016 FC with 50 amp service.

A more expensive option is the Magnum 1012 1000w Inverter/Charger. Customizable battery charging parameters using the optional Magnum display. This allows you to set the exact charging parameters for any battery technology. This would replace your stock inverter. Use a new AC and 12v panel from Progressive Dynamics. If you think you would need more batteries and more inverter power Magnum offers 3000w versions. You could then set up all 110v receptacles for inverted power and isolate fridge 110v, A/C, microwave and water heater circuits for shore power only. Probably need to get someone to install it for you. A&P Vintage Trailer Works is in Paradise, TX and performs this type of work.

Yes it can except its not available in hard wire configuration so you will need to install a duplex or chop the plug off to wire it which voids the warranty. You could also build a pigtail I suppose but since they do the same thing, the Boondocker seems to be the easiest way. Both are available however and do great. We've done it both ways.

Most Airstreams don't have an inverter except newer ones or those that have added one. If I were installing an Inverter/Charger, I would use the Samlex EVO. Same programmable feature with better surge power, has transfer relay, etc and much less $$.
Modern switching converters like the PD and Boondocker have 4 stage charging that is great for flooded and AGM batteries. On my 11th year with my Lifeline batteries so hard to argue with small minute differences between battery X vs battery Y recommendations. It just isn't that big of deal unless your using undesirable Gels for instance.
Some prefer to upgrade the converter and add a separate stand alone inverter too,and it makes most sense for most since it does save a lot and more DIY friendly.

This is a hardwired conversion with lots of pictures as to how to install.

Have you considered a 4400 TAU upgrade for your 5300 panel? It adds variable voltage and temperature compensation..

Does anyone know any details about the Parallax 4400 TAU, I looked at their website and the owners manual but their aren't many details. They mention temperature regulated charging, but is this actually a multistage charger, and what are the different charge modes and voltages?

Unfortunately it's still a single stage charger. We have them for those that insist on them but I would stick with a multi-stage charger with a desulfation mode (4-stage) Desulfation benefits AGM and flooded batteries.
