Battery charger in place of Univolt?

Hello,

So we got our "new" (1965 Overlander) yesterday, and when we plugged it into the house, smoke started pouring out of the bathroom closet. What we found was the univolt is long gone, and it was replaced with a battery charger (see pictures below.) We would like to be able to run off 120v or 12v. So my first question is, should we replace it with a new battery charger, a new univolt or a new converter like the Inteli-Power line. And my second question is, since the battery is shot, is there a particular brand or type that is better than another? Thanks for the replies!

Hello From sunny florida I am in the process of replacing my univolt with an intelipower 9100? 60 amp. I got it on line i think it would probally be a better way than just a battery charger if you are planning on using the camper any number of times a year...

I just bought the converter and plugged it in without checking the wiring.
Was that smart? It worked for me.
There are sealed batteries do not need vents, they are expensive. I like the old, rather inexpensive batteries that need venting and maybe service, like water.
How is the wiring? A short could kill your new converter, battery quickly.

Most battery chargers are not desligned as battery maintainers. The new generation replacements, like Intelli-power, are switching power supplies and can supply 12 V. power for accessories as well as properly maintain the charge on your battery and weigh only a fraction of the weight of the older technology.

Calculate the amount of 12v. power you are going to need, add a fudge factor, and purchase the appropriate new style unit (we have a commercial vendor or two in the forums).

For a battery you need a "deep cycle" type. What you get will depend upon the capacity you need and the room you have as well as how much you want to spend
