Battery Box
I am trying to make up my mind about new batteries for my 71. I am looking at the pros and cons of AGM vs wet cell. I will probably go with 2 batteries, maybe golf cart batteries.
In my mind one of the big cons about wet cells is off gasing. My batteries will sit right under my gaucho. Any one have any ideas about buying or making sealed battery boxes that I can vent to the outside? It should be relatively inexpensive or I might as well put the extra money into AGMs.

When it came time to upgrage my 12V. system I could not come up with a better venting system than the undesirable setup AS had in my Safari. I could not have a wet cell under my daughters bed so I went with one 27 series lifeline and have never looked back. Good luck Robert

When I look at the factory battery box on my 75 safari, it looks sealed to the interior... but plentry of gaps in the compartment door for venting. Is it different on a 71?

No battery box on my 71. Just a metal mounting bracket.

I relocated the battery in my Globetrotter,it is now under the gaucho. Went with an Optima AGM to avoid any vent issue and have been very pleased.

My 27' 1971 had the battery in the back trunk and it had a metal rack with a hold down bracket to keep it from bouncing around. When I put in my solar system in my 98 unit this spring I will have to put in a couple extra batteries under the couch in front. Will have to go to AGM's to prevent the venting. My first experience with and AGM wasn't the best but if I go somewhere else but Sam's Club to buy them they should be better.

OK. Made my decision. I ordered a big 4D AGM battery by Universal Battery through Randy at BestConverter.com Same 200 amp hours as 2 6Vs and over a hunnerd bucks cheaper. No battery box needed, but I might need a crane to lower this 120 pounder in position. And yes, there is one battery even bigger at 160# and 250 amp hours. But this should be big enough. Randy says performance is comparable to Lifeline but does not have as good a warranty. It's about 25% cheaper. I could have got a Trojan locally but Randy sold me with the free shipping. I also oredered a Intellipower Pendant and a battery diconnect switch from Randy. I'll let y'all know how it works out.

Sounds like you have a plan and thanks for the explanation on the battery box in the '71. Let us know how the 4D AGM works.
