Could you please offer your best guess on why the original poster's batteries went dry after a 10-day camping trip, connected to shore power, in a new Airstream? The use of the OEM converter/charger surely is not the sole cause, by itself, is it?

I know you recommend upgrading this single-stage charging unit, but if used correctly, it would not fry batteries in 10 days would it? If the trailer was in active use (12-volt devices), a healthy OEM charger should have performed fine IMO.

Bad batteries? Bad converter/.charger? Incorrect dealer charging/prep before purchase, like low water, or letting batteries discharge completely?

Again, I do understand that upgrading the converter/charger is a good goal, and your expertise is appreciated, but there should be a more nuanced explanation here IMO.

Thanks,

Peter

Peter,

I can't give you a definitive answer as :

1. I have not personally examined the batteries in question
2. I don't know the history of said batteries (in service date, length of time in an under-charged state, length of time on a constant voltage converter)
3. Actually measured the voltage and amperage output of said converter
4. Actual liquid levels in the batteries at the beginning of the trip are unknown

Without these details, it's impossible to forensically determine the actual reason for the situation observed.

I have seen liquid cells boil dry in shorter time frames. Proper charging in a MUST of you want the achieve the maximum life and performance from your batteries.
