Thanks, everyone, lots of very good information. Once I saw what the converter looked like it was easy to find its location.

I've been mulling it over and I think I'm going to keep the Parallax for a while. Yes, I know you're all cringing. I have to replace the batteries, since they're nearly dead, and adding a new converter to that would be a bit much. I have the last kid graduating from high school and his college expenses take priority. We won't be on any extended trips until after the kid starts college in the fall.

We park ours at a storage facility and it's not plugged to shore power when it's there. We have a solar panel on the roof and it will keep the new batteries topped off. The original AGMs lasted over 8 years. If I just replace the batteries for now I should be OK. POs have not had any problems with the Parallax but I will replace it at the first opportunity.

I appreciate the information on the converter models. The Progressive Dynamics 4655 gets very good reviews on Amazon. I'll look into getting a replacement later. It's #1 on my list of big ticket things to buy for the AS, right after 2 batteries.

Thanks!

Yes! It is A direct replacement for the Parallax unit.

I went with the biggest Intelipower, the PD9280. It was a pain getting it mounted; it fit in the original Parallax metal casing/chassis (which I gutted), but I had to remove metal from that original chassis for the fan on the Intelipower to get air as well as for the 12volt connections. It took several Dremel bits to cut through the metal (surprisingly stout for such a crappy converter). There was next to no additional room to get the chassis mounted in the wall frame once the thick gauge 12volt and ground connections were made; I had to remove more material from the wall-mounted frame part of the chassis so that I could slide the actual chassis back in. I like the extra capacity of the 80 amp unit, but I would go with the direct replacement next time. It wasn't a fun job to do all the modifications.

Absorbed Glass Mat. It describes the construction techniques and materials used in this type of battery.

Ok, now the dumb question...What year Airstream does the P.D. 4655 applied to? Do I need a P.D. 9245 or 9260 to replace my Magnetek 7445 on my 1999 trailer. Mine is a stand alone behind the front couch. Thank you wise men and women on the Air forum. Knowledge is power...that's why I'm powerless...in more ways than one

I would compare the dimensions and connections of the old one to the new one. You could also contact Progressive Dynamics and ask them the same question. These manufacturers are usually very helpful

Why does Airstream take good Lifelines and then ignore the manufacturer's charging recommendations and install a subpar single stage charger? One wonders if that was just a money decision or an incompetency of management/engineering or just not caring.

Hopefully just some bean counter who didn't care.

Lesson of the day...look before you buy. After removing the front couch the Magnetek 7445 has 3 wires plus plug for the nearby outlet. If it were only that easy. I will call P.D. and Lewster for suggestions. Boondocker may be the way to go. Like everything else, is bigger better? Should I go to a 60 amp instead of 45? As Tim Tayler use to say ''more power ar ar''

Voting for the latter. They're not morons, just cheap when it comes to how they should equip a premium product vs. what they can get away with when selling to folks who can't wait to get into an Airstream. Two years ago, we were those buyers.

Next time we'll have requirements ready for the dealer at the time of purchase. "Yep, you're gonna sell it to us for that price, fix all the unfinished / bent / broken stuff that came from the factory, and replace these crap components with good ones before we come back for the PDI. If the PDI doesn't go well, we'll make you keep it another month before we come back to finalize the deal and take it home."

Indeed, I have learned how cheap AS is about their manufacturing. The converter is just scratching the surface. I think that if I had known, first hand, in advance I would not have purchased one. Fortunately, I bought a very lightly used AS at a great deal and feel what I have put into it still represents a decent value. I have some dread about what I may encounter about future maintenance costs but have decided to start taking the trailer to a reputable dealer for such things as caulking, even though that is a 4 hour drive each way.
I do know that I will never buy one new with the gamble a new owner makes on build quality. I, like many other, am amazed at the price of the product combined with the cheapness behind the walls and under the floor.
