Adding a Third AGM

Our trailer has two stock AGM batteries charged with a Boondocker 12/60 and two stock 80W solar panels.

Inside the trailer under a couch is an almost empty space except for an inverter laying loose on the floor. ( No screws, an Airstream custom installation. )

Of course there are some fat 12V cables going to the inverter.

Why can't I just add a third AGM battery there in that empty space? I've got the 12V there and it would just put a third battery in parallel with other two.

I don't know why not. Airstream does undersize all of their battery cables but you would be no worse off than you already are. Just beware that you will not get equal charging from your charger, but I doubt that results in the loss of many amp-hours. By the book, batteries should be replaced at the same time and a battery monitor is not going to tell what is going on with one of 3 batteries in parallel. Again, that may not be a significant issue.

This sounds like a great idea.

Did you end up doing it? If so, how did it work out?

I'll post about it. I did it in March '17. I added a third AGM battery class 31 under my sofa as I too had a space next to the inverter. It added a nice amount of reserve to the solar mix. Everything good so far. I ended up with one of those Duracell batteries from Sams with a connector that can be disconnected by a twist.

As Larry said you want to match your batteries which usually means replacing them all at the same time. But since your trailer is relatively new you might get away with just getting the same model battery as the other two (Lifeline AGMs ?). Consider upgrading your battery cables and rerouting the cables to work better at the same time, there are several posts about how to do that. Some local battery stores will make custom battery cables or you can purchase them online.--Frank
