75 Argosy 24 Inside Lights

We have just purchased and are in the process of restoring a 1975 Argosy 24. We cannot get the inside lights to work. Do they run off a battery?
Also cannot get the pump to work. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Do you have a volt meter

Yes the inside lights were originally powered by the battery. Many of the components of that vintage trailer are most likely about ready to break down. I would start with a new battery ( after all safety issues were addressed of course, ie brakes, tires, bearings) Although I would bet that you don't have the original battery. The old battery chargers are notorius for boiling batts if you leave them on too long. There is a section on electrical sytems under forums. If you get lost, just ask for help.

75 Argosy 24 Inside Lights

Greetings Rusty47!

Welcome to the Forums and the world of Vintage Argosy ownership!

Basically, all systems operate on 12-volt DC in your coach, including: furnace blower motor, range hood vent motor, interior lights, bathroom vent fan motor, interior vent fan motors, and water pump. If you do not have a fully charged battery or a working power converter that is plugged into 120-volt AC, none of the above would be operable.

Most of the time, the power converter (Univolt) is located in the cabinet under the front soafa very near the battery compartment. There is a 12-volt fuse panel mounted on the power converter (assuming original Univolt or similar replacement), and this power converter is then plugged into a standard 120-volt AC outlet. The 120-volt AC distribution panel is often found in one of the closets/cabinets in the rear street-side corner -- sometimes, you will find that a previous owner may have switched off the circuit to the power converter.

If your coach has the original PAR (Peters and Russell) water pump, and it isn't currently pumping water but does run; it is rebuildable and will likely outlast several of the new replacement pumps. You may have to go to a Marine shop to find a rebuilding kit as Airstream was one of the few RV companies to utilize the PAR product -- it is most often found in the boating industry. My '78 Minuet still has its original PAR pump, and it is currently awaiting a rebuild kit to return it to full functionality.

Good luck with your coach!

Kevin
