12V Receptacle

The Wineguard coaxial plate in the front of my International has a 12V receptacle that is of a circumference just too small to accept DC plugs. The outlet in the bedroom fits them fine. My dealer never heard of this problem. AS and Wineguard haven't responded. I'm thinking I got stuck with a mis- manufactured part. Has anyone else had a similar issue?

I have never had this problem before...it does sound like a mis- manufactured part.

I have the same setup. Never experienced any problems with the receptacle, but have noticed some 12v plugs are larger than others.

There IS sopposed to be a standard for 12 VDC plugs, but due to the rash of Chinese products and their lack of uniformity (and quality), you got what you got!

There are a couple of other styles and sizes of 12VDC plugs, but the one you have should be the 'standard' automotive type. I would take it up with your dealer and Airstream. It's an easy change-out!

When it comes to a Dealer and a new rig don't ask them if they have heard of a problem just ask them to show you how it works. If they have a problem then they will know about the problem.

I have the same problem on my 2005. I've ignored it and plugged-in elsewhere, but I did wonder if it was related to the amp limit on that outlet vs the others (see the label on the switchplate). Sort of like different size gas nozzles for different fuel types. Never asked the dealer, but should have.

We had that problem too with the 2005 AS. At the factory I had them switch the smaller one in the bedroom to the same larger one in the front. However the only one they had was with the booster and said the booster part on that receptacle would not be functional. Until they did that switch we used a splitter(one 12volt plug into two plugs) just because that fit and would accept our 12volt appliance plugs-some were ok some were not.

Does anyone know if a 12 volt 12 amp or greater receptacle can be added and where to find one that size? I would like to buy The Wavebox microwave and it needs 12 amps or better. What is the rating of the 12 volt plugs? 8 amps?

Some 12VDC plugs are rated to 15 amps. it depends on the construction and of course, the wiring up to it. 14guage MINIMUM! I prefer to use 12 AWG on most of my power wiring. Marinco makes their 'Park Power' models that are 3-4X as expensive as the rest, but THEY ARE WORTH IT!!!! You also might check out Powerlet. They manufacture high quality water-proof components that you'll find in marine applications and also on a lot of motorcycles.

Thanks John, guess the Airstream would not run that microwave on the existing outlets. I think that new lunch box micro is just the neatest thing, however I don't think I will be hooking it directly to the batteries, perhaps I could use it in the truck outlet. If we have elctricity than it hooks up to that. But I thought on the road without a generator or on a picnic table it would be so cool to have it, (especially since our AS does not have one.)

Thanks Lew I will check out those companies you mentioned. I don't think Brad is going to want to run wiring though, from where would you run it, the batteries, can't tap in anywhere right? and where would you run it in? Is this a job any rv work shop could handle and is it a big job?

I would check out the nearest outlet. Airstream just might have used the bigger guage wire and you just have to replace the socket....you never know!

Hi, I haven't even thought of useing my 12 volt plugs yet; Good to know in advance that they might not work if and when I want to use them. Something else to check next time I pull my trailer out.

Our Wineguard socket is too tight also. I tried to plug in a small fan and the fan's plug got stuck in the socket. The plug came apart when I tried to get it out and I had to carefully drill out the wreckage. The fan plugged in fine in the bedroom socket, at least before I destroyed it.

My Wineguard is also that way, much tighter than other 12 volt outlets. I keep a dual outlet extension plugged into it. This solves the tightness problem and gives me another 12 volt outlet which I can always use.

My Winegard 12v/Booster 12v plug was too tight for several of my DC plugs as originally installed during manufacture in 2007. I replaced it with a new version 7042. The 12v socket is now slightly larger and all my DC plugs fit.
