Yamaha EF 2000

We have a FranklinChef 1.0 Cu Ft Microwave - It says 1400 watt input power and 1000 watts cooking power. We purchased a Yamaha 2000 it's rated at 1600 watts countinuous use. When we use the microwave it maxes out the RPM and lights up the overload light in 30 seconds. Is there something I am missing or did I get the wrong generator?

What else do you have running? ie converter, refer on electric, etc.
Doesn't take much to eat up the 200 watts difference in the load verses the generator capacity. I would bet you are exceeding the 2,000 watt capacity with these other loads.

Good point, no lights or fans on. But it is going through the Inteli Power 45 with battery battery charger. I can turn the battery charging off, will the inverter by itself use up much power?

I believe you are referring to a converter not an inverter. Turning the unit off will remove that load.
Is your refer on electric or gas?
Do you have other 120 volt devices in use? Hair dryer, toaster, coffee maker etc.
I regularly run my Yamaha 2KW unit with a 1,500 watt space heater as a load. Have not experienced the overload situation.

Refer is on gas and nothing else that I can think of. Just the microwave.

Did you try it with the converter off?

One other item to consider is your altitude. You need to de-rate the generator capacity by 3% for every 1,000 feet you are above sea level. At 5,000 feet, for example, your 1600 watt generator becomes a 1400 watt generator.

Also, try running the generator with the "eco mode" off (or whatever it's called.) That should force the generator to run at higher RPMs before it is loaded and reduce the impact of the microwave's start up draw.

One last thing, make sure the oil level in the generator is topped off.

I've personally learned all the above over the years by direct experience. ;-)

Thank for the tips. Seems to be the battery charger on the converter that comes on as soon as I start the generator along with the microwave start up that sends the generator into overload. Another problem solved by the forum.
