Yamaha 2400 motor surging

Started up the Y2400 after the winter. Was running fine before. Starts now runs but surges a bit every second or so. It produces elect. Whats wrong? I checked the air filter and took the wire brush to the spark plug. Ideas?

Many times when small engines surge or run poorly after a layup it is due to fuel deposits in the tiny carburetor passages. The fuel evaporates leaving the deposits.

There's a product called Stabil to add to fuel which is supposed to help with this as preventative measure . I've found with my Yamaha generator running carb out of fuel on the last shutdown has prevented this.

If the surging continues, you'll probably need to disassemble carb and clean it.

It seems to be working its way out of the system. Never had this problem in the past, but the gen set is five years old and gets a lot of hard use. I guess I should expect things to start cropping up now and then.

Howdy!

Try running some "Sea Foam" through it. Sea Foam is a fuel additive that will help clean the fuel system and like Stabil also acts a a fuel stabilizer. I have used it with good results. You can find it at most auto parts or Walmart

And remember to run the generator with the fuel shutoff engaged so you can burn any fuel left in the carb.

I had this problem with my Honda EU1000i a few years ago. Running it with eco off with some carb cleaner in the fuel for an hour took care of the problem.
