What Gen runs A/C for 1978 ambassador?

Anyone know what size generator can operate the AC unit on our camper? I don't know much about the unit other than it is origanal equipment.

Thanks

I really do not know the watts. My air conditioner is an old one and I know it pulls the amps. I use a 3500 watt generator with it. that is about all I can tell you.

Your vintage A/C unit probably pulls about 3000 Watts. They're hungry units.

there are a lot of threads on this topic. it's not just the watts but the surge from starting. for air conditioner use you're looking in the 2800w+ range.

You will not be operating the AC "only".

When you plug the trailer into a source of AC power, the Univolt automatically grabs some power.

Next, no generator should be loaded to more than 80 percent.

Therefore, if you use a 3000 watt generator, your limit is 2400 watts. The AC, depending on the ambient temperature can draw almost 1800 watts. That then leaves enough for the univolt to properly function as well.

Also, keep in mind that the instant starting current draw of your AC, exceeds the 1800 watts. If the generator is under powered, the compressor in the AC, will not start.
