Solar Charger Replacement????

All,
Was out working on the our new to us 1980 international 25’ and heard a buzzing noise. Tracked it to the solar charger and found that when I grasped it, the noise would stop for a second, but then continue. I figured that perhaps one of the relays inside the Sun selector M-8 v 3-1 solar charger was sticking or something, so I unplugged the two 12V batteries so that I would not do damage to them, and the noise stopped. Any ideas on what my issue is with the solar charger? I imagine that I may just need a replacment. Any ideas as to a straight forward replacement? I've read quite a bit about solar chargers on various threads here, but am not sure what would be my best option for repacing this one. Preferably a unit that would fit into the same compartment that the current one is located in my side access panel.

Thanks,
Rick

Hey, I think I have that same unit. I can't find my picture of it at the moment, but I'm pretty sure the company that made the controller is gone - I wasn't able to find much about them on the web.

Skater,

Thanks for the note. I also found that the company that originally made these units no longeer exists. After some research I have decided to replace it with a moningside ss-10L-12V controler that I ordered online. Should be here in a few days. Hopefully it will do the trick so we can use it over spring break with the kids.

Thanks. Please post back and let us know how it works - I'd like to upgrade ours because I'm afraid it'll cook our batteries (actually, it's probably too late if it were going to do it, but still). Others have said there's not enough current from the solar panels to do that, but I'm still nervous about it.

Skater,

I just got the new solar charge controller and replaced the unit last week. Looks like it will work well, although at night the charger goes into error mode and i have to reset it each night. Called the manufacturer and he told me that the unit was a third generation, and he had heard a similar story from another client. He sent me some diagnostics to run and after doing so said if the problem persists, he would replace it. I have not run the diagnostics yet, probably will do tomorrow. I will let you know how it goes.

Over the weekend, I ordered a Xantrex C35 with the remote temp sensor for ours, since the one you mentioned is too small for our setup, and even the 20 amp model was close to the upper limit of what our panels can produce. (We have three 70 or 75 watt panels... if they're 75 watts, then that's about 18.75 amps. Due to the age of the panels, they're probably more like 60-65 watts, but I didn't want to chance it.)

Unfortunately, other than the order confirmation, I haven't heard a peep from the company I ordered it from, and their website doesn't seem to be working (other than the order status page - which shows no status of my order)... they had good reviews on the web, so I'm not sure what's up. They've charged my credit card, too. I'll give it a couple more days and then get on them if I don't get something next week.

Well, the stuff came today! I'm hoping I have time this weekend to install it.

The MTBF-8 and the MTBF-16 controllers have an estimated life of 13.7yrs at 50% rated current based on an average of 200 analyzing cycles per day. The manual for the controller says that the unit will "buzz" when trying to charge a dead or very depleated battery. How old is your system?

If you get a Xantrex C-35 charge controller you will have an excellent, rugged, long life, no problems unit. They are between $80 and $120 for the unmetered one, and that is all you need. I have 5 of them in service at a Forest Service Campground where I do volunteer solar work and have never had an issue of any type. The battery temperature compensator is a nice add on if you are camping in very hot or cold weather, but not absolutely necessary in all cases. Personally, I would spend the extra few dollars for it.
