Propane Powered EU2000i?

Check out this link for a kit to convert your EU2000i to propane. The kit makes the generator run on propane ONLY after the modification. There is not enough room in the EU2000's case to make it multifuel. Kind of neat, it may be easier and safer to carry an extra 20# propane tank than a can of gas. One thing that would concern me is that I think the generator would be derated by 5-10% running on propane.

Pick,

It would be cool if you could mount it on the A-frame and tap into your 30# tanks!

But then if you gain some altitude, you'll lose even more power .

Thanks for the link. I just checked it. We have the EU3000i and they have the kit for this one too (not for the 1000 unfortunally).

Hmmm... rather than carry a coupla 5 gallon cans of gas in the truck bed, that would be a coupla spare 20 lb (5 gallon) bottles of propane in the bed, or for me, one spare 40lb bottle. Probably need two 30 lb bottles from what I hear about propane generators.

My Calculations....

Well, I think they are stretching it a bit, when they say that a propane powered generator will run "about the same time on a gallon of propane as gasoline". First, they assume 92,000 BTU per gallon. Actual is close to 91,504. Gasoline is roughly 116,000 BTU per gallon. With the figures stated on their webpage, (link below) I come up with the following figures:

Honda EU2000i Running full output 1600 watts:

Propane Consumption: 2.85 Hours per Gallon of Propane
Gasoline Consumption: 3.625 Hours per Gallon of Gasoline

Or, roughly 27% more fuel consumption!

Other factors to consider, are that, according to their specs, a 20# propane cylinder may not run an EU2000i at full power, a 30, or 40# may be required, especially in cold weather.

Pros: Safer cleaner refueling, no worry about spilled fuel. Longer engine life and easier starting. You are more likely to find a campground selling propane than gasoline. MIGHT be somewhat of a theft deterent. Run time is limited to how big your propane tank is, built in gasoline tank is 1.1 gallons.

Only con at this point is cost of conversion and increased cost of operation. But for as much as I will use it in a year, that will be not much of an issue.

propane

Pick, great analysis. If you had a pickup I could picture a large bedded propane tank that could feed the generator. That would be a interesting setup. Hauling gas cans around always scares me so having a propane option would be nice.

I would not worry about a bed mounted tank. There are plenty of frame mounted tanks that are available and then the bed is left clear for other things. I was always amazed at the amount of wasted space between the sheet metal and the frame on the trucks I owned.

I did the USCarb propane conversion on my honda EU2000i last season and love it. Just plug it into the front of my trailer and its done. The conversion was pretty simple, just follow directions and plug all the holes! I havent noticed a decrease in output, just no gas fumes or exhaust smells. I store the generator in my truck bed and run the hose to the trailer. Just do it!

Can you estimate the fuel usage with the conversion?
