Smile Portable Generator(s) for Larger Sized Airstream

Hi,

The Classic 30 has a 15K & a 13.5K BTU W/Heat Pump, and a 13.5K BTU W/Heat Pump is offered as an optional 2nd A/C on the International 28.

It is my understanding that dual A/C requires 50 amp power.

If I have the above info right, how should I choose which portable generator(s) to run this dual A/C setup?

Thanks

Basic answer is 6,000 watts minimum, you may need larger to allow for start up draw, or smaller if you can manage your power effectively.

Next question... I see by your avatar you are in Australia? Are you going to have to convert the Airstream to the power standard for down there? US built Airstreams are set for 120 volt 60 cycles.

Two Honda EU 2000 generators paralleled should run either of the A/C units, just not at the same time. They're reasonably lightweight, quiet, reliable, etc. Yamaha has an equivalent configuration.

I have a '15 Classic with the same A/C installation as you. I use a Honda EU3000i Handi to run my A/C. While the trailer is setup for 50 amp, I use a 30 amp pigtail from the generator. Obviously, the max the generator supplies is 30 amps. That means running only one A/C....which is more than adequate at night. It will handle the 15000 BTU unit. Obviously, I don't use the microwave or electric hot water heat when I'm running the A/C. At one time I had the two Honda 2000's, but found that carrying two generators was a hassle, especially since the main reason I wanted a generator was for A/C.

I have a FC 28 with dual air. I chose the two Honda EU 2000. Combined they deliver 3-6 amps more than either 3000 unit, and though they are two they weigh less than the 3000 units, I did not want to wrestle the heavier units in and out of the TV, I can easily manage the 42lbs x 2. The additional output allows plenty of AC startup for either unit and leaves room for other things to run such as refrigerator, hair dryer, etc. The added benefit of the two is that if one fails, though you cannot run AC, you have power still with the other.

It all boils down to individual choice! The Honda EU3000i Handi weighs 78 pounds. I suppose there will come a day when I'm unable to hoist it into the bed of my truck! As far as having two generators so if one fails....well, I had the two EU2000's - and never, ever did I have any kind of issue with either of them. I always do an annual maintenance on my stuff, though I never got to the point where I did a valve adjustment. I sold them to my nephew and he was more than delighted to get them for his vintage Tradewind.

I have 2 air conditioners like you and also have 2 3000 Honda Generators running together giving me 6000. They do a wonderful job, with both air conditioners running they are not maxed out. They weigh about 80 lbs each full of gas and oil. They have a neat handle and wheels. I park my pickup in a dip to lower the end gate and run the generators up an eight foot ramp. I am 73 with health issues, when I was 40 I could have lifted them right up. I am so happy to have them. They costed $2000 each.
